The 2nd Annual Barber Cup Matches
THE EVENT:
The Barber Cup is an event designed to honor people who's dedication and contributions lead to the existence and success of The Griffith Park Golf Club. Those individuals will be captaining a group of some of each year's most deserving members in a fun, competitive event that represents the spirit of our club. The Cup is named after Jerry Barber, the most successful competitive golfer that played a part in Griffith Park Golf Club.
FORMAT:
We will be playing 3 matchplay rounds and each match is worth 1 point, with 1/2 points going to each team when there are ties. There are 12 points up for grab during two-man team play and 12 more points up for grab in the singles matches. 12 1/2 points are needed to win The Barber Cup. If the two teams are tied at 12 the captains will choose any player to compete in a 1 on 1 sudden death playoff using gross scores.
SCHEDULE:
Pairing Party - 6:30pm Thursday September 23rd.
Fourball Matches - Wilson - 7am Friday September 24th.
Alternate Shot - Harding - 1:30 pm Friday Setember 24th.
Singles Matches - Wilson - 7am Saturday September 25th.
RULES:
The players will be divided into 2 flights. The Championship flight will play all matches straight up (gross) and the B flight will play all matches using their lower of their low index or their GP tournament index.
Net rules - Fourball matches will be played using handicap and the low man of the four will act as scratch. The remaining members will subtract the low man's handicap from theirs to determine which holes are "stroke holes". In alternate shot matches, the two players on a team will combine their handicaps, divide them by two and then use 75% of that number (rounding down) as their handicap. For singles matches, the players simply use their assigned handicap the same way they did in the Club Championship.
There will be two flights. Last year's defending champion will be granted the first pick unless his exemption was used during the Captain's picks round.
We will start the pairing party by picking from the A Flight list of players, followed by the Championship list of players. The defending captain will have first pick or can defer it to the challenging captain.
Handicaps may change prior to pairing party.
Championship Flight (Gross): A Flight (Net):
Steve Stapler - 0 - Jeff Michael Leland - 6
Greg Uberuaga - 1 - Roger Jim Marlette - 7
William Pollock - 1 Ted Johnson - 8
Pat Allen - 2 William Patton - 9
Raul Romero - 3 Steve Bloom - 12
Brendan Fehr - 4 Jensen Lee - 12
Paul Koehorst - 4 Michael Lewis - 14
Steve Hulbert - 4 Tony Jones - 15
Corey McGinnis - 5 Ryan Smith - 15
Ken Chong - 5 James Quinn - 17
Huy Dang - 5 Jim Yeager - 24
Doug Busse - 6 Jonathan Brown - 34
After teams are picked the captains will then pair 6 teams of 2, 3 Championship flight and 3 A flight teams for the Friday morning fourball matches.
The original first picker of the Championship flight will choose the team to put on the board starting with the B flight teams. They will choose one of their teams of two and then the opposing captain will pick from his teams of two who will play the team that was put up on the board. Then he will put the next team on the board. The turns will alternate through B flight then through A flight until all the teams have been matched up.
NOTE: the neutral tournament director will set the order of the tee times and matches for Friday's play according to a player's pace of play and afternoon pairings in order to expedite the rounds and finish during daylight. Pace of play is extremely important. Matchplay should always take considerably less time then stroke play so know the rules and it shouldn't be a problem.
That will be the end of the party and play will start Friday morning.
After the morning Fourball play, the captains will then re-pair their players in teams of two, within their proper flights for Friday afternoon alternate shot. They can choose to keep original fourball pairs together or change them up.
The original 2nd picker or passer would start with B flight and match picking will proceed in the same manner as it did for the Fourball.
Friday afternoon, when the results are in, the original 1st picker will begin picking singles matches and we will alternate picks. However, this round the captains may choose either an A flight or a B flight match. There will be no order to the flight picking, but matches must remain within their respective flights AND they will be paired and play in the order picked.
Saturday afternoon we will have the second Barber Cup winning team and captain. All of their names will be put on the base of the Barber Cup. The winning Captain may be asked to defend the title in 2010 with a new opposing captain elected annually by the GP board of directors.
Good luck and we hope this continues to develop into a premier event for years to come. All members support and participation is greatly appreciated.
